Mossey Joe ineligible for Cheltenham novices

Promising novice chaser Mossey Joe is ineligible for novice chases at Cheltenham next March, and indeed is no longer regarded as a novice chaser in Britain after October 2011.

Mossey Joe, who won a hunters' chase at Tipperary in April 2010, will no longer be regarded as a novice chaser in Britain after next October, with the rules of elibility for winning hunter chasers running in novice chases having been changed 18 months ago.

Noel O’Brien, senior jumps handicapper with the Turf Club, explained: "In Ireland a horse is eligible for novice chases if he has not won a chase prior to the start of the season, other than one hunter chase within the previous two seasons.

"It used to be a similar situation in Britain, but that changed about a year and a half ago so Mossey Joe will not be eligible for the RSA Chase."
