Murphy in court
on assault charge

Irish jockey Timmy Murphy appeared before magistrates in London today charged with indecently assaulting a woman flight attendant on a plane.

Murphy, 27, who lives in Faringdon, Oxfordshire, is accused of attacking the woman during a Virgin flight from Narita, Japan, to Heathrow on Sunday, April 14th.

The jockey was released on bail by magistrates sitting in Uxbridge and he is due to appear before them again on May 2nd.

Murphy is stable jockey for leading English trainer Paul Nicholls and is having his best season to date, riding over 95 winners so far this season.

But he decided to take a break after returning to the country on Monday and his agent Chris Broad believes he will be off the track for the immediate future.

He said: 'I have not discussed it with him yet but I don`t think he will return at the moment.'

Murphy, originally from Kilcullen in Co. Kildare, has had numerous successes since moving to Britain and turning professional in 1996.

He won the Irish Grand National on Davids Lad last year and was on board Ever Blessed when he won the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup in 1999.

Michael Caulfield, chief executive of the Jockeys Association of Great Britain, confirmed that they will continue to offer legal assistance and personal support to the rider.
