New Energy is firmly on course for the St James's Palace Stakes on the opening day of Royal Ascot.

A winner on his racecourse debut at the Curragh last September, the Sheila Lavery trained colt has failed to get his head in front again in four starts since, but has ran some excellent races in defeat.

Third in the Tetrarch Stakes on his penultimate start, he then belied odds of 40/1 in the 2000 Guineas at the Curragh, finishing second to odds-on favourite Native Trail.

He may very well face that rival again at Royal Ascot, in what is likely to be a red-hot renewal of the Group 1 contest.

"He's very good and he's on track for the St James's Palace," Lavery revealed.

"I will enter him in the Jersey as well just in case something happens. He'll travel on the Saturday night.

"He pulled a shoe before the Guineas and they did some job getting it back on. So just in case something happens I'll have a second option."
