New minimum riding weight for Apprentices As and from this Thursday, an Apprentice licensed in Ireland shall not be permitted to ride in any race until a minimum riding weight has been set for him/her by the Turf Club Medical Officer. Each Apprentice’s minimum riding weight shall be fixed or revised at the discretion of the Medical Officer, after assessment. Where an Apprentice weighs in or out for a race one or more pounds overweight, a report of such shall be made by the Clerk of the Scales to the Medical Officer. Following reports from the Clerk of the Scale of an overweight carried by an Apprentice, the Medical Officer may refer that Apprentice to the Turf Club Dietician for a consultation and advice, but the Apprentice shall be permitted to continue to ride. The Stewards, on receiving a report from the Clerk of the Scales, may refer an Apprentice to the Medical Officer for consideration of a review of that Apprentice's minimum riding weight. An apprentice's claiming allowance (if any) must be added to their minimum riding weight to calculate the lowest weight in a race at which he/she can ride.
