No luck for Irish juveniles at Newmarket

Both Aidan O'Brien's Crusade and Jim Bolger's Zip Top had to settle for minor money in the Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes at Newmarket today, behind the Richard Hannon trained Crius.

Richard Hughes settled Crius in second near the rail, away from the pace-setting Storming Bernard.

He was the last horse off the bridle and quickened impressively, and while favourite Farraaj and in particular Zip Top stayed on in eyecatching fashion to fill the places, they were two and a half lengths off the winner. Crusade faded in the closing stages into fourth place.

Richard Hannon jnr, assistant to his father, said: "Hughesie said they couldn't go quick enough for him.

"I'm not sure whether he'll do anything else this season as he's been busy already and we might well put him away for something like the Greenham.

"He's improved all year and we'll just see how he winters."

Roger Varian said of the runner-up: "It's a shame we couldn't win but Frankie (Dettori) said not to be too disappointed as he wants a mile and that it rode like a six-furlong race.

"We'll have a think whether he goes over a mile a some stage this year."
