Oaks one-two for Ed Dunlop

Ed Dunlop landed a fantastic one-two in the Kildangan Stud Irish Oaks at the Curragh today with Lailani just getting the better of stable-mate Mot Juste.

The winner was produced late by Dettori to collar Mot Juste inside the last 100 yards and battle her way to the Group One prize.

Chamela Bay had set a searching gallop but was a spent force when headed by Mot Juste inside the two furlong marker.

Richard Hughes` mount, however, was shadowed by Lailani (5-1) - who found that little bit extra when asked for her effort by Dettori inside the final furlong.

Aidan O`Brien`s number one hope, Karsavina, ran on for third while the Ballydoyle trainer also got the fourth with Sequoyah.

The wonderful thing on a great day for me is that I have won the race for Sheikh Maktoum who wanted to run Lailani in this race, owns my yard and has given me some top-class horses to train all along,' said Dunlop.

'Life can`t get much better than this. I thought Lailani had it all to do from thenumber one draw, but Frankie gave her a wonderful ride. A month ago this filly did not have any fancy entries, but we did put her in the Yorkshire Oaks which is a possibility now,' he added.

While a stewards` inquiry was called soon after the horses passed the post, the winner was not involved much to the relief of Dettori, who said: 'This week I lost a French Classic with Noverre and now I have won another on Lailani.

'This filly has a very big heart and dug deep in the last furlong. Ed has done a great job to keep her sweet and improving still after Epsom.

'I thought Lailani had a few pounds to find on these fillies, but when Foreign Affairs which she beat at Epsom won the John Smith`s Cup yesterday I was happier,' Dettori concluded.

There was a record Oaks attendance of 10,000-plus and they saw champion trainer O`Brien compensated for the defeat of his six-strong Oaks team as his pair King Charlemagne and Mull of Kintyre dominated the finish of the following Emirates Airline Minstrel Stakes.

Both the winner King Charlemagne (8-11) and the runner-up will come into calculations for the Champagne Lanson Sussex Stakes at Goodwood according to trainer O`Brien.

'I am delighted with both horses. Michael Kinane said that King Charlemagne only does what is necessary and we will have a look at Goodwood for them along with Black Minnaloushe and Bach,' Aidan said.

Kinane however was out of luck earlier on in the day aboard the David Nicholls-trained 9-4 favourite Proud Native in the Ladbroke Rockingham Handicap as 14-1 chance Newpark Lady emerged best in the hands of Richard Hughes.

Proud Native could never get on terms with the trail-blazing Pipisflying which was only overhauled close home by Newpark Lady to give her local trainer Kevin O`Brien his biggest success since retiring from the saddle to take out his licence.
