First Wave made the most of his previous experience when proving too strong for the opposition in the Thomastown Maiden at Gowran Park.

Placed on all four previous starts, the Aidan O'Brien trained colt made the most of this opportunity in which he was equipped with a first-time tongue tie.

Pushed along to lead after a furlong, Wayne Lordan dictated on the son of Wootton Bassett, as Chris Hayes gave chase on the Dermot Weld trained newcomer Pierre Royal

Asserting from over two-furlongs out, First Wave stretched clear under Lordan to record an ultimately impressive four-and-three-quarter length success.

Chris Armstrong said: “In fairness he had the form in the book. His run in the Curragh at the start of the season was nice and he just disappointed a bit for no reason in Dundalk but has stepped forward since.

“Wayne gave him a lovely ride from the front, controlled it, set an even tempo and kept quickening up to the line.

“We’ll probably have a look at something like the Britannia with him and see where he fits in.

“He’s a progressive horse and hopefully he goes on from here.”
