Based near Dushaughlin, Co.Meath, young trainer Gearoid O’Loughlin enjoyed a fine spell of form back in March just before the 2019/2020 National Hunt season came to a premature end.

Space Cadet landed the Randox Ulster National at Downpatrick and that had been preceded a couple of weeks earlier by Cedarwood Road’s victory in the Irish Racing Writers Kingsfurze Novice Hurdle at Naas.

Ridden by Davy Russell, the Stowaway gelding just got the better of the 142-rated Beacon Edge after a good tussle from the last in that Listed contest.

It was a fine effort from the Chris Jones-owned 5-year-old on just his third start over flights, and it came on the back of an emphatic maiden hurdle success at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting.

Co.Clare native O’Loughlin, who took out his licence in 2018 after spells with the Costello family in his native county as well as with Enda Bolger and Jim Bolger, is looking forward to going chasing in the coming weeks with his talented youngster.

“He’s schooled well and may start off in a beginners' chase in Navan next month. I’d like proper soft ground (both hurdles wins came on yielding to soft).

“We’ll probably start him off over two miles although I think he wants further.”
