Persian Punch wins Goodwood Cup at last Veteran stayer Persian Punch (6-1) won the Goodwood Cup today at the fourth time of asking. Ridden by Richard Quinn, the eight-year-old made most of the running, battling back to regain the lead and beat Double Honour (9-1) by a length and a half. It was just reward for Persian Punch, who had won 12 races previously in his long career without landing either the Goodwood Cup or the Ascot Gold Cup - the best prizes for long-distance horses. Persian Punch almost lifted the Ascot race in June when he was beaten by a head by Royal Rebel in a tremendous battle. Revenge was sweet on Thursday, with Persian Punch battling through a downpour and Royal Rebel finishing no better than sixth of the 12 runners, beaten by 16 lengths. Winning trainer David Elsworth said: 'Jump him off in front and improve your position - that`s the way to ride him.'
