Poet just gets there to nab Rip

Poet's Voice landed a last-gasp victory over Rip Van Winkle in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.

Frankie Dettori got the Godolphin-owned colt home by a nose from last year's winner in the mile Group One, sponsored by Sony. Red Jazz was just half a length behind in a third.

Victory on the 9-2 shot completed a 78-1 treble on the day for Dettori, successful earlier on White Moonstone and Redford.

Air Chief Marshal set the pace for Rip Van Winkle before Aidan O'Brien's first string made his bid for glory as the field straightened up after the turn.

However, Rip Van Winkle could not see off his rivals and it was Poet's Voice who found that bit extra in the dying strides to snatch the glory.

Hot favourite Makfi could not get in a blow and was well-beaten.

Dettori said: "Saeed told me the horse was in tremendous form and I really can't believe I've won the two big races here today.

"It's been a long time and I am full of emotions. I just don't know what to say. It's just fantastic."

Bin Suroor added: "On the way from Newmarket I said to the boys I thought we would have three winners - and now we've had two Group Ones and a Listed.

"I said my horses were doing well enough to achieve that and Poet's Voice has looked really good since he won at Goodwood.

"I told Frankie to drop him in behind and show him he was boss. Now the target will be the Breeders' Cup Mile."

Makfi's rider Christophe Soumillon revealed his mount was not himself.

"He was really nervous and fractious and tried to get under the gate. He has never been like that before," he said.
