Protectionist part-owned by Wexford natives

There was a strong Irish connection with the winner of the Melbourne Cup, Protectionist, as he is part owned by Wexford natives.

Long-term Australian residents, Walter and Robbie Power, originally from Dunmain near New Ross, and Fergie and Delia Doyle from Ballygarrett part own the German trained winner.

The four-year-old son of Monsun was owned by Christoph Berglar up until last month before being purchased by Australian Bloodstock Ltd.

Both the Doyle’s and Power’s are in business in Sydney having emigrated to Australia in the 1980’s.

The Power’s father Edward has had plenty of horses in training here down through the years with four-time winner Ned’s Indian his most recognised representative..
