Purple Is Cheltenham Possible

Deep Purple could attempt to bring up a five-timer over timber in the Anglo Irish Bank Private Banking Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham on Friday.

The Grade Two event, registered as the Sharp Novices' Hurdle, has attracted its usual strong entry but trainer Evan Williams is keen to see how good his six-year-old is.

Unbeaten in four starts over obstacles, he was impressive in winning a Listed race at Kempton last month.

'I'll have to talk over plans with (owner) Mr Green and I have been quite happy with him, but I'll have to keep my eye on the ground and what have you,' said Williams.

'He's very progressive and I'm very happy with him. I'm a big fan of the horse and he has taken every step up in his stride. He looks very progressive.

'There will be a lot of very nice horses coming out in the next few weeks though, so we have to keep our feet on the ground.

'What I liked most about his last performance at Kempton was the way he battled. You can win a lot of little races and look impressive, but you can win a lot more races with tough horses than those that look brilliant.

'Cheltenham might suit him as the stiff finish could be just what he wants.

'I wouldn't say he was a definite starter until I've talked it over with Mr Green, but we'll weigh up the pros and cons and go from there.'
