Racing abandoned at Cork Racing at Cork today has been abandoned due to unsafe (slippery) ground conditions. The last two races will not be staged and Acting Steward Shay Quinn said: "The Stewards met with a delegation of senior jockeys who felt that the track had become greasy and slippy following a period of rain. "Evidence was heard from the Clerk of the Course Val O'Connell who said that the track had been extensively spiked and sanded prior to racing. "The Stewards also met with a number of trainers, and the Racecourse Manager, and having taken all the evidence into account, abandoned the remainder of the meeting in the interests of safety." For his part Clerk Of The Course Val O'Connell explained: "A delegation of jockeys met with the stewards relating to the safety of the course and that horses were slipping on the bend. In consultation with trainers and jockeys, the meeting was abandoned in the interests of safety." Jockey Bill Lee revealed: "A few horses slipped and it also happened in a maiden where we weren't going very quick and we weren't bunched. When they slip like that it's unsafe." Trainer Johnny Levins commented: "If safety is a concern, the right thing has to be done and it was done. Five horses slipped in five separate incidents and one horse nearly went down. It's not safe and they have to do the right thing and in the end, the right thing was done."
