Well-backed Cozone (morning 8s, returned 7/2) scored on his first run for 386 days today, landing Downpatrick’s Hood McGowan Kirk Handicap Hurdle for owner Debbie Kelly and father-and-son, trainer-and-jockey Matthew and James Smith.

The nine-year-old’s previous success came in a Clonmel claimer in October 2024 and, despite lacking race-fitness, he was well supported and produced to lead after the last when beating Coppola by 7.5 lengths.

Trainer Smith stated “Cozone hadn't run in a year and had kind of lost his form. He's hit and miss, but had a good break and was in good form lately. We knew he was fit, he ran in a schooling race there recently and went well. We'll keep tipping away with him.

“I have 14 or 15 in training for the summer and we'll have a few ready to run in the next three or four weeks."
