Dour stayer From The Ashes (7/2) landed the Tote Always SP Or Better Handicap Hurdle at Fairyhouse to give Charles Byrnes a fourth winner from his last six runners.

The nine-year-old, whose only previous success had come over fences in 2023, wore down Dippedinmoonlight on the long run between the final two flights and stayed on well to score by a length and a quarter in the three-mile contest.

Philip Byrnes, in the colours of Byrnes Bloodstock Limited, rode the Ocovango gelding to victory for his father, but did pick up a six-day suspension for using his whip with excessive frequency.

“He has been consistent in fairness to him,” said the winning trainer Charles Byrnes.

“His last three or four runs, he’s been knocking on the door and it was good to get it.

“He needs three miles, obviously. He was a small bit leery, he thought about it for a few strides.

“I suppose he’ll mix it between hurdles and fences, he’s a good fun horse.

“He’s a bit quirky, even though he wants soft ground, he might travel a bit nicer on that better ground.”
