Back Down Under stuck on gamely in the closing stages to make a winning return to action in the six-furlong Nua Healthcare Handicap at the Curragh.

Leigh Roche produced the 8/1 shot to dispute, travelling well, passing the two pole and she bagged the lead going to the furlong marker.

The Padraig Roche-trained filly stayed on strongly to the line as Dark Viper finished off well to get within half-a-length.

It was a second career success for the daughter of Australia, who had also won over seven furlongs here last June.

Roche said:- “She’s improved from last year. I didn’t know if she wanted six or seven (furlongs) but six looked fine there.

“She was only just touched off in the Birdcatcher on soft ground, so she handles that ground well.

“They are a group of local lads that own her, they have her leased from JP, and he’s been kind enough to let us have her for another year.

“The lads get a great bit of sport out of her.”
