Rodger Sweeney reports Salsify in good heart for his second run of the season in the Mullinavat GAA Club Fundraiser Tetratema Cup Hunters Chase at Gowran.

The winner of the Foxhunter Chase at Cheltenham in 2012 and 2013, 14-year-old Salsify made a pleasing reappearance when third to Ucello Conti at Navan three weeks ago on his first start for 12 months.

Sweeney said: “He will run on Saturday. He’s in good form — but he’s meeting old rivals like On The Fringe and Sizing Coal, and horses like Kruzhlinin.

“There’s a few of them. It depends what runs, but it should be a good race.”

Salsify retains all his enthusiasm despite his advancing years, according to Sweeney — who hopes the veteran will be fitter after his comeback effort.

“It was a very good run last time, and it was his first one back as well,” said the Castlelyons trainer.

“If he comes on a bit from that run, he’ll make them all travel. He really likes his jumping — for his age, he has a great appetite for it.

“He’s been a great horse to me.”
