There’s six Irish raiders heading to Britain on Saturday and it's a mixed bag too with one at York, three at Newmarket and two at Hamilton.

We assess each of their chances in what looks like an ultra competitive day of racing, but it's a Ballydoyle colt at Newmarket who stands out as the best Irish chance of the day.

  • Samui - York 15:45

Gordon Elliott sends Queen Alexandra Stakes runner-up Samui across to York to take his chance in the Group 3 Silver Cup Stakes. Hollie Doyle will take the ride on the dual-purpose performer, who has been found out at Listed level, handicap level and at Royal Ascot on latest effort when a well beaten second. On that evidence, he looks set to struggle in a tougher race here, taking on runners who have produced a higher level of form of late.

    Italy - Newmarket 16:00

The Irish banker of the day is Italy in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes over 7f at Newmarket. The 200,000gns son of Wootton Bassett holds an entry for the Group 1 Vincent O'Brien Stakes at the Curragh in September and he created a strong impression when making a winning debut at Leopardstown in May. Despite a very slow start, he finished off really well and the runner-up has since finished second in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot. He could be an exciting type.

Whistlejacket & Ides Of March - Newmarket 16:35

Two more Ballydoyle contenders will take their chance in the following Group 1 July Cup Stakes at Newmarket. Whistlejacket won a Group 2 over course and distance on this card last year and was better than the bare result when sixth of 21 in the Commonwealth Cup on latest effort, short of room at a crucial part of the race. Stablemate Ides Of March was well behind him on that occasion and it will be a surprise if he's good enough to get involved.

    Catherine Chroi - Hamilton 19:00

Claire O'Connell sends two runners under the radar to Hamilton on Saturday night and the first of those is Catherine Chroi in the 6f handicap. The mare was slowly away when 10 lengths off the winner at Bellewstown on latest run, but she's a dual course and distance winner. Her last victory here was in May 2024 off a mark of 73 and she's now 10lb lower so she's certainly handicapped to strike if anywhere close to her best, while she also has a nice draw.

    Roman Harry - Hamilton 20:30

In the extended mile handicap, O'Connell runs Roman Harry and he certainly holds a strong chance. The gelding's sole win came at Laytown last September, but he's been running well of late, notably when flashing home to finish third from off the pace at Bellewstown nine days ago. He races from the same mark in Britain which is a little surprise and this represents a slight ease in grade. He has to be considered.
