Scottish trainer found dead

Trainer Peter Monteith was found dead at his home in Scotland on Sunday night.

Police were called to the trainer's yard in Rosewell, Midlothian after receiving an emergency call, and the 61-year-old was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

A police spokesman said: "Lothian and Borders Police and ambulance personnel attended at an address in Rosewell, Midlothian on Sunday evening in response to an emergency call.

"A 61-year-old man was conveyed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

"Whilst enquiries are at an early stage there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances at this time and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in respect of the circumstances."

Monteith had three runners at Kelso's meeting on Sunday with two being placed, while he saddled Dizzy to win the 1994 County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Former top National Hunt jockey Mick Fitzgerald told At The Races that Monteith was a "gentleman".

He went on: "That is the first word that springs to mind when I think of him.

"He was a really nice guy and a stalwart of northern racing.

"He had been doing well for David Johnson and had some high-profile winners for him.

"It's a real shame and our thoughts are with his family."
