Shania appeared to hold strong claims in the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden at Killarney and duly landed odds of 8/15, although it got a bit sweaty for supporters in the closing stages.

The Donnacha O’Brien-trained filly looked to be well in control of the mile event when pushed to the front about two furlongs out but distress signals started to be sent out as the final furlong approached.

Gavin Ryan needed to get serious inside the final 150 yards as newcomer Spanish Princess outran odds of 25/1 when staying on strongly to get within a neck at the line.

The front-running Quatrain could only keep on at one pace a length and three-quarters back in third.

The same trainer/rider combination were also on the scoresheet here yesterday evening with Drama Queen.

O’Brien said, “She is huge and is a very big girl. She ran here last year on very quick ground and didn't come out of it very well, so it has taken us a while to get her back.

"It looked a good opportunity on nice safe ground, and it is nice to get her head in front.

"She quickened past the leader, and I'd say she then got lonely in front but in the last half-furlong probably got tired, as she had been off for a year. It probably wasn't a strong race, but her touch of class got her through."
