Silvano strikes for Europe in Million

Andreas Wohler`s globe-trotting Silvano (6-1) notched another memorable foreign victory as he raced to an emphatic success for Germany in the Arlington Million in Chicago, the third leg of the Emirates World Series.

It is not the first time Silvano has landed success overseas this season - he took the Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Sha Tin in April, as well as the Singapore Cup at Kranji in March.

And jockey Andreas Suborics had the five-year-old in a perfect position throughout today`s 10-furlong contest, always tracking trailblazing Redattore, who attempted to make all under Alex Solis.

Redattore (11-1) still led turning for home but, when Suborics asked Silvano to quicken over a furlong out, the response was immediate and he stretched clear.

Jerry Bailey and Hap (7-2) gave chase but the German raider was too good and had three lengths to spare at the line.

Redattore stayed on bravely to take third with Silvano`s countryman Caitano running a fine race back in fourth.

Gerard Butler`s Compton Bolter was always towards the rear and never got in a serious blow, while favourite Bienamado was a beaten horse before the 12-runner field entered the home straight.

Dermot Weld`s Irish hope Muakaad raced in mid-division but was unable to live with the principals in the Grade One event.

Solis gained compensation for Redattore`s defeat when Startac (11-1) got up in the shadow of the post to land the Secretariat Stakes.

The Theatrical colt looked to have a lot do as Strut The Stage (9-2) went for home after collaring 3-1 favourite Sharp Peformance, but he was eating up the ground in the closing stages and prevailed in a thrilling photo-finish.

Sharp Peformance, who was chasing a four-timer, had to settle for third.

Michael Bell`s Snowstorm ran a creditable race, tracking the leaders for a long way under Michael Fenton before being tapped for toe in the straight.

But another British hope, Roger Charlton`s Aldwych, was disappointing, always towards the back and finishing well adrift.

France`s Mizzen Mast, trained by Criquette Head-Maarek, also showed up well for a long way before fading.

Earlier on the card, Christophe Clement`s England`s Legend ran right away with the Beverley D Stakes.

She was sent to the head of affairs straight from the off by Corey Nakatani and the pair never looked in the slightest danger of being caught in the extended nine and a half furlongs Grade One contest.

The four-year-old daughter of Lure really lengthened entering the home straight and flashed home around seven lengths clear of The Seven Seas with Spook Express back in third.

Hot favourite Astra was a bitter disappointment, never going that well under Kent Desormeaux and trailing home last of the nine runners.
