Owned and bred by Pius Collins, Wing Back landed a gamble in the Denvir's Of Downpatrick Handicap Hurdle.

Failing to make a significant impression in seven previous starts, the Sam Curling-trained five-year-old was available at 16/1 in early shows for this near two-mile two-furlong heat, but eventually went off the clear 7/4 favourite.

In mid-division early on, the bay victor soon improved to track the leaders on the outer and was poised to challenge in second from two out.

Getting to the front before the last, he was ridden on the run-in and drew clear in the closing stages, ultimately coming home four-and-a-half lengths to the good.

Towards the head of the market in early shows, Parkgarve (9/2) had to settle for second after attempting to make all, while Georginas Jet (11/1) was another three-quarters of a length away in third.

"Put the hood back on him and relaxed a bit better today. He kept going up the hill and jumped well all the way," Enright, who was registering his sixth winner in the space of a week, commented.

"Around here, it is a quicker track and they went a bit quicker and he just relaxed a bit more. Definitely helped and it mightn't have been the strongest race in the world, but he got the job done.

"They said he was going well (at home), but it wasn't the strongest race in the world as I said. The hood just did the trick and he relaxed a bit better for us today."

STEWARDS REPORT

The Raceday Stewards requested a report from S. Curling, trainer, as to the apparent improvement in form of Wing Back, placed first, as compared with its recent form. S. Curling stated that his charge had a hood back on today as it had run too keenly without it last time out. Having considered the report the Raceday Stewards noted the report given.
