Despite proving rather friendless in the betting, the Paddy Twomey trained Sky Captain stayed on best under Billy Lee to win the concluding Jimmy Murray Agri Services Maiden at Roscommon.

Initially priced up 6/4, the Fracas gelding drifted out to twice those odds by the time the runners set off for this mile-and-a-half race.

Tracking the pace as market leader Janes Harbour took them along, Billy Lee was pushing along in fourth as the field entered the home straight. Colpe Cross headed the long time leader over a furlong out but was soon joined by both Sky Captain and Prove Yourself

The latter had no more to give from over 100 yards out, with Sky Captain just edging ahead close home to get up to beat Colpe Cross a neck.

“He was good and green on debut there. He’s a nice horse and I thought coming here he’d run a good race and I’m very happy with how it went,” said Twomey.

“The dam won the Guineas and it’s nice to have him.”
