Clonmel's Paul Kavanagh Memorial Handicap Hurdle honoured the memory of the young jockey who rode a winner on the corresponding card last year, and who tragically lost his life in a car accident at Christmas.

The two and three-quarter mile contest saw Sallap (12/1) repeat her course and distance success of last October.

The daughter of Court Cave, trained by Sam Curling for owner/breeder Willie Cleary, came from well back in the field and had moved into second two out where It's Time Again crumpled on landing when a couple of lengths to the good. Left with the advantage, Aidan Kelly's mount stayed on well to account for Oogum Boogum by three and a-quarter lengths.

It was a winning spare ride for Kelly after intended rider James Smith was stood down following a fall in the third race. Smith also missed a winner in race four where Kevin Sexton deputised for him on Holy Joe

"After James (Smith) had his fall, Sam Curling rang looking for somebody to ride this mare,2 explained Kelly.

"I had ridden work for him during the winter and he had previously given me a ride which didn't work out last Christmas, so it is nice to repay him with a winner.

"She had fallen (when leading at the last) in Thurles last year and she isn't overly big, but the lads told me that she was good and tough."
