Spencer Keen On City Chance

Jamie Spencer is looking forward to seeing his old acquaintance Detroit City strut his stuff against the might of the Irish in the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle.

The former British champion Flat jockey partnered the Philip Hobbs-trained grey to success in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket in October.

And he has always taken a keen interest in all things Cheltenham, famously booting home the Edward O'Grady-trained Pizarro to a neck success over Rhinestone Cowboy in the 2002 Weatherbys Champion Bumper.

'Detroit City only ever does enough ? if you ran him in an ordinary race I think he'd still only just win a few lengths. Even the day he beat Hardy Eustace at Cheltenham, I'd say he was just idling in front,' Spencer told At The Races.

'It will be interesting to see him back in a championship race with a good pace. If he's upsides at the second last, it will be a tough battle between him, Brave Inca and probably Hardy Eustace.

'I think everybody is looking forward to watching it.'
