Jockey Eoin Staples, who had been amongst the winners earlier in the afternoon, recorded a double as the Cian Collins trained Sporting Glance easily won the Charles And Kathleen Caldwell Memorial Rated Novice Hurdle at Downpatrick.

An impressive victor at Galway last time, the gelding was racing off 9lb higher on this occasion. However, with Staples taking over from Danny Gilligan, that rise was offset to the tune of 7ib.

Tracking the leaders early on, Sporting Glance came through to dispute three out. Moving on after the penultimate flight, the 3/1f had manners in hand well before the last.

Coasting clear up the hill, the six-year-old scored readily by seven lengths from the staying on Penny Perfect

Cian Collins said: "Exactly, the 7lb off (claim) just levelled it there. He was impressive there and did it very well.

"Eoin thought he had gears there again today, so he is probably versatile enough. It is nice to see him do that on a bit of softer ground as well. That is soft enough out there now and it takes a bit of getting.

"We won't rush him, we won't overface him but he is a nice horse to have and hopefully he keeps progressing."
