There was in-running carnage for punters in the Big Boss Group Handicap Hurdle as Springboard surged home from an unpromising position.

The favourite Wild Wild Wind and Uptaurintop were the two horses tussling for the spoils deep into the run-in, however, Springboard stayed on in behind them and took them both by surprise as he whooshed past close home to win by a length and a-quarter at 8/1 for Cian Quirke.

Wild Wild Wind (4/1f) had to settle for second and was half a length in front of Uptaurintop (5/1).

This was Springboard's breakthrough success at the eighth time of asking.

Michael McDonagh said: "I thought the ground was too heavy for him because we always felt he wanted better ground. What worked in his favour was it was a two-miles race and he really stays 2m4f, so flew home.

"I told Cian to ride the horse as he finds him, but you can't really give jockeys like him instructions as he won a Grade 1 race recently and is a good jockey.

"The horse had a problem with a leg in the past and had a layoff, but is back now."
