St Cuthbert’s Cave, trained by Gordon Elliott for Gigginstown House Stud, gained reward for his consistency when taking the KilbegganRaces.com Maiden Hurdle.

The Court Cave gelding was bought by current connections for 150,000 pounds after winning a Kelso bumper for Rose Dobbin and was placed three times this year before falling at the first at Fairyhouse earlier this month.

The 2/1 joint favourite put the record straight here when prominent throughout under Josh Williamson and leading approaching the home turn.

He kept on well on the run-in to beat Huntsgrove by two and a quarter lengths, with the other joint favourite Trasna Na Pairce a further half a length back in third.

Williamson said, “He’s done it well and was entitled to on his form. He’s hit the crossbar a couple of times and the fall the last day didn’t seem to matter to him as he’s a good jumper.

“On good ground I thought he’d be fine and after the rain it’s probably yielding to soft out there and that’s ideal ground for any jumper. He handled it well.

“Two and a half for the moment is ok and you could see him getting further in the future.”
