Staffordshire Knot (11/2) won the Pertemps Network Group Handicap Hurdle (Qualifier) at Punchestown for trainer Gordon Elliott and owners Gigginstown House Stud. Custom Taylor made it a searching test of stamina by going a good gallop in front but the winner gradually moved into contention on the approach to the straight and led before the last to beat Millstream Lady by five and half lengths.

Custom Taylor weakened after being headed and finished a further 10 lengths back in third.

Winning trainer Gordon Elliott, who sent out four winners at Punchestown yesterday as well as scoring with Wodhooh at Ascot, said: “To be honest he’s been disappointing. He came with a bit of a reputation, but I don’t think he was right last year. He never held his condition or looked great all year and this year he looks a lot better.

“He looks a happier horse now and I wouldn’t rule out ever going back over fences.

“He’s qualified for the race (Pertemps Final) and I’d imagine he’ll go back there.”

Winning rider Carl Millar added: "They went plenty hard up front but I was fairly confident and was happy to take my time. He has lots of ability and has had a couple of niggly problems along the way but he bounced back really well here today.

"It's brilliant to get on these horses and ride in these colours. The yard is in top form at the moment and I'm just delighted to be a part of it."
