Stan Cosgrove passes away Renowned Veterinary surgeon and former manager of Moyglare Stud Stan Cosgrove has died at the age of 91. Stan was one of the great characters of Irish racing and will be sadly missed by all who knew him in his various roles within the industry. Born in Kildare town in 1927 Stan managed Moyglare Stud on behalf of the Haefner family for 50 years having first joined the operation in 1962 as their vet. He was also a director of Goffs for 40 years until his retirement from that position in 2017. Cosgrove will also be forever remembered for his association with Shergar. Not only was he the horse's vet but also a shareholder in the syndicate that owned the stallion when he was kidnapped by the IRA in 1983 from Ballmany Stud. Fiona Craig, Moyglare Stud’s bloodstock and breeding adviser, said: “He was a fabulous man who lived a fabulous life. “He was just short of his 92nd birthday. Even in the last week, the mind was as sharp as it ever was. “Stan was still in contact with Walter Haefner’s daughter, Eva Maria, when he retired. “He’ll be sadly missed by everyone in racing, and not just in Ireland. Everyone in racing knew him. “He was probably one of Ireland’s most gifted vets. Wherever you went in the United States, Australia or anywhere, everybody knew him. “He was a pioneering vet in orthopaedic surgery and colic surgery on racehorses. He was doing things before they wrote the text book. “He was a supreme vet back in the days when they learnt it the hard way.” The following death notice appears on rip.ie: Peacefully, at home, surrounded by his loving family.
