Stand To Take Cheltenham Option

Peter Bowen is steering his Gold Cup runner-up Take The Stand towards a return to Cheltenham in the Letheby & Christopher Chase on January 28.

Following a disappointing show in the Betfair Chase, the 10-year-old put in a far more promising performance in the Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase at Wetherby on St Stephen's Day to get within a length and a half of Therealbandit.

'He came out of the Wetherby race fine - that was a good performance giving Therealbandit 16lb as Therealbandit is a really good horse,' Bowen told At The Races.

'That ground wouldn´t really suit him in a good race, so he´ll be better come the spring with better ground.

'I would imagine he will probably run in the Letheby & Christopher Chase at Cheltenham where he should get better ground.'

Bowen added that Mckelvey, who was pulled up in the Welsh National, is now set to revert to novice company.
