"Still a bit of sparkle there" - Berry on Edwulf Edwulf is the star on show at Down Royal on St Stephen's Day in the Bluegrass Hunters Chase. A Grade One winner as recently as February 2018, he is remembered for recovering from serious illness prior to that success. It was after running in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham in 2017, won by Tiger Roll, that Edwulf gave his connections much cause for concern. He had travelled smoothly into contention before stopping abruptly after the second-last and collapsing, requiring extensive veterinary care to recover. On just his second start back, he won the Irish Gold Cup in one of the most emotional renewals of the race. Most recently he won a point-to-point for Enda Bolger, but is now back with his original trainer, Joseph O'Brien, for the hunter chase season. Owner JP McManus' racing manager Frank Berry said: "He went to Enda's for a few months to get qualified for hunter chases. "He's not what he was, but there's still a bit of sparkle there, so hopefully he can give a good account of himself." Taking him on is Gordon Elliott's classy Ucello Conti and Pierce Power's Burning Ambition.
