Subiaco recorded a 28/1 surprise when racing prominently throughout under Leigh Roche to take the opening Floodlit Friday Nights At Dundalk Stadium Handicap.

The Kieran Cotter-trained colt hadn’t troubled the judge in three maiden outings, but an opening handicap mark of 54 proved competitive as he showed good speed throughout in this five-furlong sprint.

Roche got to work over a furlong out and despite an anxious moment when his mount lurched towards the exit gate about 150 yards out, he kept on well in the closing stages to score by a length and a half.

The evens favourite An Laochmor held every chance in second with Tommy McJohn just a neck further back in third.

Roche said, “His work at home has been a lot better than what he has shown at the track.

"He has been spoiling his races by being slowly away and latching on a bit keen. Today he jumped and travelled.

"It is hard with the wind blowing you around, it is blowing you over to the stands' rail.

"I'd say you will (see him back here) and hopefully the handicapper isn't too hard on him. He is a good-actioned horse, so I think he will handle the grass as well.”
