Clonmel takes centre stage in Ireland on Thursday with a seven-race card. The action kicks off at 13:40 and runs through to the finale at 17:05 and we have provided selections and analysis for three of the races on Thursday’s jumps card.

Selections

3.25 Clonmel - Sights Unseen

3.25 Clonmel - Sights Unseen

A runner-up in two point-to-points at the start of this season, Sights Unseen returned to the track last month and put in a credible performance when second in a handicap hurdle at Down Royal.

She had not shown much at Shay Slevin’s yard but her runs in point-to-points this campaign suggested she had developed somewhat and convinced Gavin Cromwell to take her on board.

Sights Unseen was dropped in trip on her debut for Cromwell and almost got off to the perfect start. She raced prominently and was challenging for the lead but before being outpaced at a crucial point.

She rallied after the last, however, and was only just held by the winner. That run gives her a platform to build on and she can go one better if producing a similar level of performance.

4.00 Clonmel - St Cuthbert’s Cave

St Cuthbert’s Cave has shown notable improvement in recent weeks and has strong claims of registering a first win over hurdles.

A Kelso bumper winner in May 2023, he was bought by Gigginstown and made his hurdling debut in November of that year. He made a promising start, not always jumping fluently but finished third.

He did not make much impression on his next few starts, being pulled up twice and finishing a distant eighth at Naas.

However he has shown he has developed somewhat since making his reappearance at the beginning of this year, first with a fourth-place finish at Naas last month and then an encouraging third at Navan three weeks ago.

His jumping seems to have improved a lot and the step up in trip to 2m3f should suit him as he has been getting outpaced in the closing stages of races over shorter. He has every chance in this weak event.

5.05 Clonmel - Imperial Tune

Imperial Tune’s latest effort suggests he is closing in on a maiden success and a step up in trip could prove the catalyst in the Clonmel finale.

Having not finished closer than 12 lengths behind the winner on his previous eight runs under rules, Imperial Tune was beginning to look like a campaigner who can easily be dismissed. However he put up his best performance when third at Punchestown last time and his stamina looks a strong point.

It was not a perfect performance by any means, at times hitting flat spots, but he stuck to his task gamely. The step up to three miles - combined with heavy ground - should really play to his strengths and he is one to keep on side in an open race.
