  • 5.35 Tipperary - Big Island

Victory looked to be within reach for the eight-year-old Big Island at Limerick last month, as he jumped the final fence with a narrow lead of a length and seemed poised to fend off the persistent challenge of Birdsandthebees.

It was a performance full of promise, one that suggested a breakthrough might be just around the corner.

Despite ultimately being collared late on, there was plenty to take from that effort, and connections will no doubt have taken heart from the manner in which he travelled and jumped throughout.

There is every reason to believe they will be heading into this race full of confidence that he can go one better.

Although he has been nudged up 4lb for that run, he still finds himself 3lb lower than his current hurdles mark, a fact that underlines his potential for further progress over fences.

It’s been a gradual process, but signs are now strong that he is beginning to translate the ability he showed over hurdles into his chasing career.

His latest performance suggested the penny may finally be dropping, and there’s a sense he remains on a fair mark.

If he can build on that momentum, Big Island appears well positioned to open his account over fences, despite the slight rise in the weights.

6.42 Tipperary - You Oughta Know

The 6.42 looks a fairly competitive beginners’ chase, with several holding realistic chances. You’ve got the experienced Western Fold and Mahon’s Way taking on the likes of Rushmount and You Oughta Know, who are making their chasing debuts.

You Oughta Know has always been highly regarded, ever since his bumper days. He won his first two bumpers in impressive fashion and was even touted as a lively contender for the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham. However, he ran no sort of race that day. He did what was required on his hurdles debut but failed to deliver when stepped up in class.

That said, he still retains plenty of potential, and fences may yet bring out the best in him.

While this looks like a competitive contest, he’s the one who could be a cut above the rest.

7.15 Tipperary - Cause For Comment

Cause For Comment was only narrowly denied last time out in a race of similar nature and over the same distance, producing a performance that firmly underlined his potential in this sphere.

It was a run that deserved more than a minor placing, and if he can take even a small step forward from that effort, he looks more than capable of going one better here - and doing so with a degree of authority.

While a handful of his opponents have managed to get their heads in front in low-key point-to-point contests, those wins came in races that lacked depth and strength in opposition.

None of them have yet produced a performance approaching the standard Cause For Comment set last time, when he ran to an unofficial mark in the region of 120—125 - a figure that comfortably sets the benchmark in this field.

On that evidence, he holds a clear edge on form, and provided he runs to a similar level, he should prove very hard to beat.
