Trainer Jimmy Harris dies

Melton Mowbray trainer Jimmy Harris, 66, died of a suspected heart attack last night, it was announced today.

Speaking at Newmarket, Norma Macauley, who trains near to the Harris yard, said: 'It is a terrible shock for everyone. I can`t believe it _ I was laughing and joking with him at Southwell only yesterday.

'It`s very sad and I just feel so sorry for the family.'

Harris enjoyed a career as a professional jump jockey until a fall at Huntingdon in 1972 left him wheelchair-bound and he took out a trainer`s licence the following year.

Gold Cup winner Burrough Hill Lad won two juvenile hurdles in the early stages of his career while with Harris, before going on to Cheltenham glory in 1984 for Jenny Pitman.

The Melton Mowbray handler also enjoyed a fruitful partnership with owner David Abell and he guided Abell`s Star Rage to victory in the County Hurdle at the Festival in 1996, as well as Vindaloo to a share of the 20th-century record for most handicap wins with nine victories in 1995. - PA
