Tributes come in for the late John Fowler

Members of the racing community have been paying tribute to the late John Fowler who died in a tragic accident on his farm at Summerhill, Co Meath yesterday.

Ted Walsh said "I'm really shocked by the news. I had a long chat with him over a cup of tea at Navan on Sunday and he was in great form."

He added "We rode against each other for many years and I always admired and respected him. He was a very good colleague and a very good rider and trainer. On and off the track he was a gentleman and all he wanted was to do you a good turn if he could. It is really awful news."

Jim Kavanagh, chief executive of the Irish Racehorses Trainers Association, said "it's a terrible shock and he'll be badly missed by all his colleagues and friends, indeed by everyone who knew him."

"John retired only recently after 20 years on the committee of our association. He had lots of experience and a very cool head, and was a huge help to the association in all the different crises we faced."

Brian Kavanagh, chief executive of HRI, said "it is really desperate news. Among John's other roles in racing, he was a very active director of Fairyhouse racecourse."
