We were treated to an excellent day’s racing at Newmarket on Saturday, with three juvenile Group races and the valuable Cambridgeshire Handicap on offer. As such, there was lots of Irish representation.

Here we pick out some of the most eye-catching runners who could be worth adding to your notebooks. The horses in question surely have a big win in them and it would be no surprise if that comes next time out.

Royal Lodge

Saturday’s opener was the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes over a mile and it didn’t disappoint. George Boughey’s Bow Echo came out on top, extending his unbeaten record, but there was lots to like about the performance of Action back in third.

Aidan O’Brien’s colt was a bit slow at the start but stayed on well once he got going in the final couple of furlongs. A little bit short of room at a key stage, he may well have finished even closer. He may want further in time and looks set to win a Derby trial next season.

He has plenty of size about him and it’s not hard to imagine him improving next year, after a winter of growing and filling out his frame. We haven’t seen the best of this horse yet and he’s definitely one to note for the future.

Cheveley Park

Next up was the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes, which is run over 6f. Three of the nine runners were based in Ireland and the raiders completed a 1-2. Both are worth keeping an eye on going forward, especially winner True Love.

She had some excellent form going into the race, having won at Royal Ascot in June, and she really announced herself by thrashing the boys in the Group 2 Railway Stakes after that. Defeat in the Phoenix Stakes was a little underwhelming but she bounced right back here.

Another one for Aidan O’Brien, she was always prominent and was ridden to take up the running with one furlong to go by jockey Wayne Lordan. Keeping on well to score by just shy of a length, she could be one to watch in races like the Commonwealth Cup next season.

Havana Anna represented the Donnacha O’Brien yard and she ran a cracker to finish second in the end. Finishing third to Gstaad on debut, she has since gone on to win a Listed contest at Naas and produced a career-best performance at Newmarket.

Middle Park

All bar one of four Irish raiders struggled to some extent in the Middle Park but runner-up Brussels was the only one who put in a big effort. Another Ballydoyle runner, the son of Wootton Bassett was a little keen in the early stages but that didn’t affect his performance too much.

The winner stumbled badly but still managed to win anyway and would have been an unlucky loser, but Brussels battled all the way to the line and managed to hold off Coppull, who was a fast-finishing third.
