Weld makes case for racing to return Leading trainer Dermot Weld has spoken on RTE radio this evening about the implications of the current lockdown on the sport of horse racing. Weld said: "It has had a huge negative effect on the industry. You must remember horses and training is a rural based industry throughout our country. "There's close on 28,000 people employed in this industry, all depending on jobs. It's vital that as France and Germany and possibly Britain get going in the next week we have to be there as well. "Racing is ready to go. We have operated successfully on ten occasions behind closed doors and I believe Ireland can quite capably do it again, highly successfully, and indeed lead the world and show the world how behind closed doors we have the protocols and the people to do it properly.
