Dermot Weld introduced a potentially smart newcomer in the shape of Darzina who stayed on nicely to make a winning debut in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies & Mares Maiden at Gowran Park.

A daughter of Siyouni, the Aga Khan-owned filly was sent off 15/2 under Oaks winning jockey Chris Hayes.

Tracking the leaders in fifth entering the straight, Darzina had work to do as Joyful Princess Crystal Ball and Offshore Bay vied for the lead.

However, once asked to go and win her race, the response was instant as Darzina quickened up smartly to lead over a furlong out.

Odds-on favourite Tswalu kept on late to get up for second, ahead of Joyful Princess back in third place.

Dermot Weld, “She’s a beautifully bred, medium sized filly.

“She’s been working well, and I thought she’d run a very nice race.

“I’ve an open mind where we go but she’s obviously a filly that I’d hope during the year to get black type with. She’s from a very strong female family.

“She may get further.”
