There is a very West of Ireland feel to the 5.05 at Newmarket today, the Lloyds TSB Cardnet Classified Stakes with horses such as Paddyfrommenlo and Mayo Lad in the line-up.

The former is owned by Pat McDonagh, and many may have thought the Supermacs chief of the same name is the man in question but that isn't the case as trainer John Hills explained of the Frankie Dettori-ridden Hurricane Run three-year-old (described on the trainer's website as a lovely scopey colt by Hurricane Run, winner of the Irish Derby, The King George and The Arc. This colt is out of a full sister to Bankable, winner of more than £1million between 1 mile and 1 mile 2 furlongs and looks a classy prospect).

Hills said on Friday afternoon: "Pat is very much an Irish man and he goes back home two or three times a year to visit family and friends.

"He's been in England for 20 or 30 years, he's in the recycling business. He's a super fellow. Menlo is the home place whilst nowadays he also spends some of his time down in Portugal.

"Paddyfrommenlo is a nice horse and he won't be far away today. We think he'll go well."

Mayo Lad is towards the head of the betting for Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes (due to be replaced). This son of Holy Roman Emperor has been a consistent servant for Middleham Park Racing Ix & James Pak.

Other noteworthy runners in what could be an informative heat are Amoralist (Mayo native Ted Durcan takes the mount), the well-bred Counsel, the charmingly-named Dellbuoy and Tadhg O'Shea's mount Widyaan (cheek-pieces first-time). (EM)
