The Aidan O'Brien-trained hotpot Wordsworth had to work hard to land the odds in the conditions race at Gowran Park this evening.

Having cut out the early running the Galileo full-brother to Kew Gardens was headed at halfway by Sunchart

Ryan Moore had to get to work on the 4/11 shot to challenge turning for home as Phoenix Cowboy travelled well to join the front two.

It boiled down to a duel between Sunchart and Wordsworth in the closing stages and the hotpot just found a bit more close home to secure a head victory.

The stewards had a look after the front two came close late on but the result stood.

Wordsworth had been third in the Irish Derby last year to Hurricane Lane and had also chased home that rival in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris.

Chris Armstrong, the stable representative, said afterwards:- “He’s very lazy at home and will need racing to bring him on fitness wise.

“He’d good form last year and ran well in the Grand Prix. He’s having a good blow and that will bring him on a lot.”
