The St Leger is the final and oldest Classic of the British Flat season when star stayers head into battle over a distance of one mile and six furlongs at Doncaster racecourse.

The following contenders are the current market leaders for this year’s St Leger:

Gregory - Royal Ascot winner and three-time winning colt Gregory heads the market for this year’s St Leger. Although beaten last time out in the Great Voltigeur at York, the Golden Horn colt is popular to bounce back to winning ways.

Continuous - also among market principals, this Aidan O’Brien-trained three-year-old has been consistent this season finally landing a big prize in the Group 2 last time.

Desert Hero - Gordon Stakes winner and tough stayer Desert Hero is towards to top of the market to take to 2023 St Leger. Owned by the King, this son of Sea The Stars is also a Royal Ascot winner and has progressed nicely for trainer William Haggas.

Middle Earth - recently thrust into the St Leger picture after winning the Melrose Stakes at York by one and a half lengths. A late supplement at the cost of £50,000.

Vincent Finegan's St Leger Festival Tips

The St Leger is the highlight of the four-day meeting at Doncaster along with the Doncaster Cup. Both races present plenty of opportunity to unearth good value as the best horses head into battle. Editor Vincent Finegan is here to guide you with your St Leger betting and help you to find winners along the way.

Vincent, who lives on the Curragh in Co. Kildare, is the editor of irishracing.com and has almost 40 years experience in the horse racing industry. He writes a weekly blog on this website covering all aspects of the sport and presents our Irish Angle video show on Mondays. He is a dual winner of The Irish Field naps table.

3.00 Friday Doncaster Cup - Coltrane

Coltrane must give weight away to his rivals in this Group Two staying contest, but is admirably consistent and is very capable of doing so. He beat Trueshan by a neck in a thrilling renewal of this race last year and it would be no surprise to see a similar result again.

3.35 Saturday St Leger - Gregory

Gregory lost his unbeaten record when finishing third to Continuous at York, but is a confident choice to reverse that form over this longer trip. Frankie Dettori made a lot of use of Gregory over 1m4f at York, knowing the distance was on the sharp side for this thorough stayer. With an extra 2 furlongs to cover this time there will be less pressure on Gregory to force the pace and he should be able to out-stay his rivals at the finish.

Haggas hoping Desert Hero can provide Royal St Leger win

Forty six years have passed since Dunfermline secured victory in the Doncaster showpiece for the late Queen. The Queen also achieved success as an owner in top-flight races, including the 2000 Guineas, the 1000 Guineas, and the Oaks.

Desert Hero has already etched his name in history by giving the newly-crowned King and Queen their first-ever win at Royal Ascot, when he triumphed in the King George V Stakes in June. Since then, he has bolstered his chances of winning the St. Leger by winning the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood.

Trainer William Haggas was delighted with the performance of the Sea The Stars colt on his most recent victory. However, despite high expectations from the racing punters as he heads to the Town Moor this weekend, Haggas is keeping his enthusiasm in check:

“He’s in good form and doing well — he worked this morning and he went nicely. He’s done now so we just have to hope for the best,” he told Sky Sports Racing.

“He was impressive at Goodwood with cut in the ground and he won on top of the ground at Royal Ascot, so I don’t think that bothers him too much."

Rain arrives at right time for Arrest

Arrest, one of the market leaders for the St Leger, trained by John and Thady Gosden will welcome wet weather at Doncaster to turn the ground in his favour.

The son of Frankel won the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury last month, however Frankie Dettori stressed the need for rain-softened ground if he is to produce his best.

Recent hot weather threatened his chances of lining up on Saturday, but the rain has come and Doncaster was good to soft, soft in places on Tuesday afternoon.

Barry Mahon of owners Juddmonte said: “He’s in good shape, I think John and Thady are both happy with how he’s training.

“We’re just keeping an eye on the weather forecast because it looks to be changing a bit, it looked a bit unlikely that we’d be running last week but I think they’ve had a bit more rain than was anticipated and there looks to be more to come.

“At the minute we’re very much on track for Saturday, we’ll just monitor the ground later in the week.”
