Formscan By Gary Carson - RIVER VALE can gain some compensation here after falling with the race at his mercy in Thurles last time. The Mick Winters-trained gelding looked set to collect then, when travelling strongly down to the last, only to crash out. A 4lb rise for that effort doesn’t look harsh. James The Brave didn’t jump well when last seen over fences but could be a threat now. He has been in fine form over timer recently and his previous two outings over fences were good so it may pay to draw a line through that effort at Limerick over Christmas. Doyen Magic has a nice low weight in this and could be another contender.
An extended handicap steeplechase for five years old and upwards that have not won a steeplechase before 4th May 2025, other than one hunters steeplechase within the previous two National Hunt seasons (120 = 11st 12lbs)
Penalties - Winner of a steeplechase after calculation of the handicap shall carry 7lb extra for each steeplechase won.

It didn't look the strongest race but that is always the worst race to watch! Off his Leopardstown run you'd have to say he'd win,. I have him entered up plenty since Leopardstown but was just waiting for nice ground and today's wasn't his ideal ground. He is a lovely honest horse and this is grand to get out of the way. Of course we would love to go to Cheltenham and the Supreme Novices is a month today, although today's performance wasn't good enough to win a Supreme. I wouldn't chance running him before it though. Tony Costello (consignor) mentioned him to me in Doncaster and in fairness to Paul Lyons, living in London, and Tom Quinn they bought him between them.

I’d say he got bogged down in the ground at Limerick - it was very deep, holding ground. He has a nice bit of experience jumping which I thought might be a help to him if we were going to make plenty of use of him. I’d like to think he can go on goodish ground. He’s a good scopey horse and should make a nice chaser.

He had a good run as a four-year-old in a bumper but he hadn't respect for his hurdles afterwards and going over fences today has really made a horse out of him. He was a bit disappointing the last day in Galway but he is only a five-year-old so hopefully can improve. He was the youngest horse in the field today. The owners have been great to me and are mainly from Clonakilty and another is London-based.

His run at Limerick (runner-up last month) was lovely and solid and, if he came forward at all, he'd have won today's race which wasn't the best on paper. He is a lovely straightforward horse and jumps really well. His jumping was a big asset today and he'll stay chasing. Gaps always open up on heavy ground at Clonmel and Gary was very good on him. That is Gary's claim gone and he rode his first winner as a professional for me here some years ago.
