I haven't got him all that long. We ran him for the first time since Dessie (McDonogh) retired in Clonmel, and he ran well. I was a little worried about the ground tonight, I thought it might be a little quick, but all the lads said it was good and safe with a nice bit of juice in it. He handled it well. He got a great run around and jumped super. He's sweeter than he was a while ago. He's really travelling there nicely and doing everything well. Nice one to look forward to.

That was lovely. He had a good run the last day in Navan on ground that I didn’t think he’d handle. We were expecting him to improve off the back of that,. He won a maiden hurdle last year, I thought it maybe wasn’t the strongest race and maybe he was lucky to win it but I always thought he’d stay that three or three-and-a-half miles and he did. A special thank-you to Aidan Kelly as he did a lot of schooling with him during the winter. Unfortunately he couldn’t ride him the last couple of times but he got a very good ride from Donagh. He jumped very well, Donagh said down the back he just kept jumping himself into it. He stayed all the way to the line and I’m delighted with him. Today was kind of the plan. When Aidan got off him after riding him at Fairyhouse, in a beginners chase, he said he’d be ideal for this race. He was always going to come here. That’s his second run in a handicap and hopefully he can keep progressing. He’s going to get a hike for that so we’ll see where we got after that.

That was his second run for us. He was off the track there for a long time. He got a run back, he just blew up the last day. Hopefully he'll improve again another bit. He's coming back from a long lay-off. It was a nice run. It took him a while to warm up into that race but he was strong at the finish. Maybe he will step up in trip the next time.

She struggled in Naas the last day and Phillip just pulled her up in time. He said that was the saving of her today. He looked after her. She needs nice ground and she put up a nice performance there. From a long way out I thought she was travelling and jumping very well, she was really enjoying it. It was an ordinary race she won in Clonmel and we were a bit disappointed in Naas but in fairness Phillip said ‘don’t worry about it’ as she needs a bit of nice ground. I have to give him the credit. I might go to Fairyhouse with her, there is a three-mile novice handicap there and she might get into that now. She hasn’t ran that often. That’s only her fourth run over hurdles and she’s won two races now.

we’re delighted with him and we won this race last year with Answer To Kayf and, the year before, James Dullea (Rusheen's previous trainer) won it. James is involved with this horse and we got him from James so it’s a bit of a coincidence. All our horses were wrong over Christmas and this fella scoped wrong a few times and didn’t get to run so we’re were a bit disappointed. He did a couple of nice pieces of work a fortnight ago and was due to run in Thurles but gave himself an over-reach so we just had to take it easy for a few days to let him recover. We came here today really not knowing. I said to the lads that he was working well but I had never got him away and I wasn’t really sure. He’s a big horse, ground conditions suited and he jumped great. Phillip gave him a super ride. We got him in the autumn and I wasn’t really sure what to make of him but his work after Christmas definitely improved. He was on an ideal weight, bottom weight, on heavy ground. We’ll see what the handicapper does and keep him to these conditions. That was his first run in 10 months so you’d be hoping he’d improve a little bit.

I really fancied this horse as his work at home has been exceptional. We bought him during the summer from Emma Lavelle's, left him off for a while and in the last few weeks his work had been really really good. I'd have been disappointed if he had been beaten. I told Sean to ride him with full confidence although he is such an experienced rider there wasn't much point in Eric McNamara telling Sean Flanagan how to ride in a handicap hurdle.
