2004 Grand National Weights Revealed

Last year's Aintree Grand National winner Monty's Pass has been given a formidable weight of 11st 7lb for this year's race.

Jimmy Mangan said he was surprised by the hefty weight given to his stable star, who landed a #1m gamble by winning the National.

He said: 'I thought I would be a bit lighter, but that´s the way it goes.

'The main thing is to get there in good form. He´s in great form and he´ll be having a run in a few weeks and hopefully everything goes well.'

First Gold has been handed top weight. The Francois Doumen-trained French horse heads the handicap on 11st 12lb.

Rince Ri, Harbour Pilot and Fondmort rated are rated 2lb lower.

Ante-post favourite Hedgehunter - one of a seven-strong Willie Mullins contingent - has been given 10st 9lb.

No horse allocated a weight of 11st or more has won the race since Rhyme ´n Reason in 1988.

A total of 66 horses are on 10st or above in the weights published on Tuesday for the 2004 race. A maximum field of 40 will line up on Saturday 3 April.

Jonjo O´Neill has a strong hand with six entries headed by Clan Royal (10-2), who has won twice over the Grand National fences.
