A look ahead to the Ladbrokes St Leger

There could be French representation in the final Classic, the Ladbrokes St Leger, with trainer Mikel Delzangles still considering next week's £650,000 Doncaster showpiece for Vengeur Masque.

The three-year-old Monsun colt, who is owned by the Wildenstein family, was successful twice earlier this year, taking an extended 12-furlong maiden at Saint-Cloud in May before going on to record an easy four-length triumph in a conditions race over a slightly shorter distance at Compiegne on June 17.

Last time out, Vengeur Masque was stepped up to Group Three level for the Prix De Reux over an extended 12 furlongs at Deauville on August 9, when he finished a staying-on fourth behind the four-year-old Loresho.

He is a 25/1 chance for Ladbrokes St Leger glory with the sponsor.

Delzangles, who saddled Makfi for a shock 33/1 victory in another British Classic, the 2010 2000 Guineas, reported: "Vengeur Masque will work on Saturday and we will make a final decision then as to whether he will travel over for the Ladbrokes St Leger.

"I thought it was a good performance last time at Deauville, particularly as he was taking on older horses.

"I feel he has improved since then and, if he works well on Saturday, then I think we might well come to Doncaster.

"If the ground were to come up soft, he would not mind that at all."

A total of six horses trained in France have won the Group One St Leger in the post-war period, the latest being the Andre Fabre-trained Toulon in 1991.

There are 12 horses still engaged in the St Leger, which takes place over one mile, six furlongs and 132 yards at Doncaster on Saturday, September 12, the fourth and final day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival.

Heading the market at 11/4 is Order Of St George, one of six entries currently remaining for Ireland's champion trainer Aidan O'Brien who is seeking a fifth Ladbrokes St Leger victory. The Galileo colt leapt to the head of the market following a stunning seven and a half-length victory in a Group Three contest at the Curragh on August 23.

The second favourite is Storm The Stars (William Haggas) who landed the Group Two Great Voltigeur Stakes, one of the leading trials for the St Leger, at York on August 19 having previously placed in both the English and Irish Derbys.

The five-day confirmation and £50,000 supplementary entry stages for the Ladbrokes St Leger are at noon on Monday, September 7.
