ANTHONY POWELL KILLED IN CAR CRASH

Former national hunt jockey Anthony Powell was tragically killed in a car crash on the Curragh on Wednesday evening.

He was returning home from his yard at around 8pm when his car went off the road near the five furlong start at the Curragh racecourse. His was the only vehicle involved in the incident.

Powell was a much loved member of the jockey`s room. His ready wit and constant good humour brightened the lives of everyone he touched and he will be sadly missed both in and out of racing.

He is best remembered for his association Maid Of Money on whom he won the 1989 Irish Grand National. He also forged a wonderful partnership with another John Fowler trained mare, Opera Hat.

Other highlights from his career in the saddle were two Ladbroke Hurdle wins aboard Hansel Prince in 1985 and Dance Beat in 1996.
