The Irish EBF Auction Series Race over an extended seven-furlongs proved to be a real head-bobber and it was Apollo's Comet who got the verdict by the narrowest margin for Jessica Harrington.

Good late money forced her price down to 2/1 favourite on the back of a third place on debut at Fairyhouse.

She had the leaders Tosca No Candis and Sea Of Rain well in her eyeline in third swinging for home and launched her challenge outside the furlong pole.

Sea Of Rain held a fractional advantage inside the final furlong, but was headed by Apollo's Comet in the closing stages, however, Sea of Rain battled back close home to force the photo.

Apollo's Comet beat the 5/2 runner-up (from 9/2) by a nose with Miss Ellie Mae just a neck away in third at an easy-to-back 3/1.

Assistant trainer Kate Harrington said: "She had a lovely run the first day. She didn't get the clearest of gaps at the bottom of the home straight in Fairyhouse. I think she would have been a lot closer. In turn, she didn't get a hard race that day.

"This looked a nice opportunity. It's not many Mehmas' get into these auction races, so it just looked a nice opportunity for her and, she just got there and did enough.

"She is a lovely filly for next year. We'll give her a bit of time and bring her back maybe the end of July."
