Apprentice Sheridan scores on claimed Tyson Fury Eighteen-year-old hockey Mel Sheridan registered a fifth success today, steering gentleman Tyson Fury (9/4f) to win Dundalk’s opening Irishinjuredjockeys.com Apprentice Optional Claiming Race. The grand nine-year-old gelding, who had been hurdling recently, had previously landed a course-and-distance claimer in March and today was produced by Sheridan to lead a furlong out, before holding the late challenge of Autocrat, by a half-length. Hogan said "on paper you would expect him to do that, but he's nearly a ten-year-old and has had a few issues over the years. It is great to get a win for him, and it is brilliant for these horses to have somewhere to run. “He'll make a nice horse for someone if he is claimed, and more than likely will be claimed, as he's a dual-purpose sort. If not, he can come back here for a claimer in a few weeks' time or go hurdling as well." Regarding Sheridan, a brother of established jockey Joey Sheridan, Hogan added "Mel is improving. He didn't sit on a horse until he was 15 or so and he is now having some outside rides. He really impressed me lately on one of Leslie Young's (winner Highway Sixty One, Dundalk) and works so hard. He is riding all our yearlings that have been broken and is a lovely kid." Tyson Fury was indeed later claimed for €8,000 by Shauna Kelly to be trained by Noel Kelly. Quotes from Michael Graham
